About Rachel A. Markel
Expertise
For the past 15 years I have been working in the field of Complementary Alternative Medicine with a focus on plant based medicines. Through my educational and supply company, eoilco laboratories, llc., I have trained practitioners from every level of western and non-traditional medicine. Currently, I lecture at Miami Dade College, Barry University and the University of Miami. I have been afforded the opportunity of working with medical professionals throughout the United States. I have also developed protocols using plant based medicines; essential oils and herbs. The use of Plant Based Medicines is experiencing a resurgence in many aspects of patient care and preventive medicine as well. My background and degree is in Health Psychology, I realized years ago as a student at FIU that essential oils had powerful and quantifiable affects on the human body. Research is now showing all of this and more. From the classroom to the lab I have found that today's educated consumer no longer distinguishes between good for your body and good for your soul. Driven by over 70 million consumers, health and well-being is a holistic movement that strives for equilibrium between family, work and self. The new wellness is balance. Currently, I am on a mission to change how my city, Miami is being cleaned. To see the main ingredient that is being used by parks, municipalities, schools, universities and families visit www.GreenTerpene.com. In my spare time I write a weekly blog for www.BalanceBoost.com, a Wellness and Green Social Network. Sign-up to receive the weekly Wellness Guide. Aromatherapy - Aromatherapy for Temperature Comfort?

Expert: Rachel A. Markel - 8/18/2009

Question
Hi Ms. Markel,

Isn't it interesting that two people sitting in the same room can have widely different views on whether or not the temperature is comfortable?  Sometimes I sweat while my wife shivers.  What aromatherapy solutions exist that can help people feel warmer or colder regardless of the actual air temperature?  Those without overpowering scents are preferred but I'll consider anything.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer
Dear Steve,

Hello and thank you for your inquiry.  I must admit that this is a very interesting question that you have posed.  While there are several essential oils that have an affect on body temperature they definitely have very distinct aromas.

Most often essential oils are used in a compress method to achieve either an increase or decrease in body temperature which might not be a practical method for your purpose.  Usually compresses are employed as a result of a health condition or to alleviate symptoms related to strains, sprains or bruises or fever.

I would recommend looking into herbal remedies in the form of herbal teas, oriental herbs or ayurveda.   This would provide a much safer method than the use of essential oils for your convenience.

I am sorry that I could not be of more help to you, if I come across additional information with regards to your question I will definitely keep you posted.  If you or your wife are suffering from some type of health condition that would cause the difference in body temperature then I would be interested in knowing this and can offer a more detailed response.

Be well,

Rachel
