About Judy Frayne
Expertise
I specialise in the mixing of oils. Every problem has a different solution depending on the underlying causes.A simple headache could be caused for a number of different reasons. Tracking down the origins of a problem is the first step. I can then advise on the correct oils to use,how to buy them and the methods with which they can be applied. I can also recommend other complimentary techniques for self help with many physical and emotional problems. Feel free to ask about: Skin disorders - eczema, psoriasis, atheletes foot Muscular aches and pains - arthritis, neck and shoulder tension. Painkilling - headaches, chronic pain, backache. Digestive disorders - IBS, constipation. Stress - depression, anxiety, grief, anger, concentration. Medicine cupboard - bites, stings, cuts, bruises, burns. Babies and childrens - tummy aches, colds, sleep problems. And many more !

Experience
I have been a qualified aromatherapist for twelve years, working in my own premises as well as mobile visiting. My clients have been varied - ranging from babies to the elderly and sadly, the terminally ill. Whilst many clients simply wish to use aromatherapy to promote a feeling of well being and keep themselves relaxed and healthy - I have had much experience of clients with specific needs. These are just as wide ranging - from skin disorders to back problems on the physical side - to the emotional and spiritual side of things and problems such as coping with grief and bereavement or helping combat anger and stress. I use a mixture of techniques including reflexology. I believe that aromatherapy is a very simple and natural method of self help that can compliment conventional techniques. I am passionate about passing on safe and sensible advice so that more people feel confident to try aromatherapy for themselves. Aromatherapy is not always a cure - but it's potency should never be underestimated. It can help, it can be life changing - and it's certainly worth trying

Aromatherapy - aromatherapy for crohn's disease

Expert: Judy Frayne - 9/21/2009

Question
I am Orhan and i am from Turkey. I hope you could help me with my problem.

I have a friend who has Crohn's disease, and as you might know it's a disease that never completely heals. Crohn's disease is an autoimmune disease, in which the body's immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract, causing inflammation -as the wikipedia goes. My friend has fistulas at her tummy and she lives with a plastic bag that stores her bowel's sap. i want to know if i can do anything to benefit her with aromatherapy. I studied reflexology, deep tissue massage, shiatsu and thai massage; but they don't seem to help her efficiently. I hope you can give me some advice. I really wish to help her somehow.

Thanks for answering, with best regards.

Answer
Hello Orhan. Thank you for your question. Some time ago I treated a friend a who had Crohn's disease. She too suffered much inflamation of the intestine and had some of it removed, although it sounds as if your friend has a more aggressive version of the disease.
To be honest, I think that aromatherapy can help with the inflammation and with pain killing, but the best help you can give, with both aromatherapy and massage, will be to encourage your friend to relax and reduce the stress that this disease causes.

The lady I treated used to enjoy a back massage, and having foot reflexology. Your friend may enjoy a  particular area or type of massage to relax them. I think any massage or reflexology should be incredibly gentle, as the whole body will be quite traumatised. But I think the physical contact is important because the wearing of the plastic bag is not pleasant and often makes the wearer feel they are repugnant to others. To give a massage gives reassurance and comfort at the very least. it sounds as if you have studied massage well, and I am sure you will benefit your friend greatly.

The oils I would use to help the condition are as follows: amounts are for one application diluted in approximately 10 - 15 ml of carrier oil. I would use three oils out of the list below to begin with. If you feel confidant that your friend reacts well to the oils, you could add one or two from the rest of the list.

Also your friend may like to have a bottle of oil made up so that they can use it themselves - a tummy rub may be comforting. For this I would use 50 ml of carrier oil and add up to 20 drops of oil in any combination from the list below. However I would limit the tea tree oil to a maximum of three drops.

Roman Chammomile - anti inflammatory, soothing and calming  2 drops
Lavender - anti inflammatory, soothing and calming, cooling  2 drops
Sweet Marjoram - anti inflammatory, soothing and calming, painkilling 2 drops
Yarrow - helps the auto immune system, anti inflammatory, digestive   1 drop
Tea tree - helps the auto immune system  1 drop

I wish you and your friend the best of luck. You won't be able to cure the Crohn's disease but I am sure your friend will feel so much better for the treatments you give them.

Best wishes
Judy
