Question
What are the contraindicators of sweet orange essential oil

Answer
Hi Jennifer - thanks for your question.
The main contra indications for sweet orange are it's direct effects on the skin. It can be an irritant on sensitive skin - I never use it on the face. It will also increase the photosensitivity of the skin, so combining it with much direct sunshine is not a good idea. It is thought that it may increase the liklihood of tumerous growth if applied directly to tumerous areas.
So avoid : skin cancer
          broken or sensitive skin
          very fair skin
          exposure to sunbathing
          eczema or other skin complaints
However, I will say that in small amounts, one or two drops only in any immediate application, it will provide a pleasant and refreshing compliment to other oils. You can counteract the irritant side of it by blending it with such oils as ylang ylang or frankincense - both very soothing oils on the skin. Also, as 'top notes' any citrus oils will evapourate very quickly once out in the air, so their life time during the massage is limited.
I always ask my clients if they allergic to oranges or citrus fruit as well. I have come accross a few in the years I have been practising.
I hope that answers your question.
Regards
Judy

Experience

I have been a qualified aromatherapist for twelve years, working in my own premises as well as mobile visiting. My clients have been varied - ranging from babies to the elderly and sadly, the terminally ill. Whilst many clients simply wish to use aromatherapy to promote a feeling of well being and keep themselves relaxed and healthy - I have had much experience of clients with specific needs. These are just as wide ranging - from skin disorders to back problems on the physical side - to the emotional and spiritual side of things and problems such as coping with grief and bereavement or helping combat anger and stress. I use a mixture of techniques including reflexology. I believe that aromatherapy is a very simple and natural method of self help that can compliment conventional techniques. I am passionate about passing on safe and sensible advice so that more people feel confident to try aromatherapy for themselves. Aromatherapy is not always a cure - but it's potency should never be underestimated. It can help, it can be life changing - and it's certainly worth trying
