Art History - James Meadows

Expert: Jeni Andrews-Fraser - 1/16/2008

Question
I have a painting that was represented to me as a James Edwin Meadows painting.  It is titled "Backwater of the Thames" and is signed "James Meadows"  Do you know if Mr. Meadows did sign his paintings this way? I understand his father was also a painter. Any info would be appreciated.  Also I do not wish to keep the painting and have very little knowledge of the "art dealer world".  Can you point me in the direction I need to take to sell this painting.

Answer
Hello Susan - and thank you for your question.  It's highly likely - and hardly unusual - for an artist to sign a painting with his first and last names .. but as to whether James Meadows did, I cannot say.  I don't know where you are writing from, but suggest you look in the Yellow Pages, or on-line, for fine art dealers in your area to take your painting.  Look for one specialising in either the type of painting you have (land-/seascape) or the century in which the artist was working (if you can ascertain that from a date or a style of painting - around 1860s for this artist.)  The dealer will be able to advise you on value and 'sale-ability'.  For UK sales I recommend Burlington Paintings, who already have paintings by this artist for sale on their o-line catalogue.  For the US - sorry, I can't help you at all.  Good luck - hope you make oodles of cash!
