Hello Susan and expert, I am the great grand-daughter of James Meadows Snr's daughter Frances Amelia.  I have several portraits by James Meadows Snr but none has a signature on as they were of his daughter and were obviously kept by him.  The father seems to have been a protrait artist and scenery painter in London, but may I refer you to our family website, meadowsfamilytree for further information and images of the family.

I think it likely that you have the father's painting as because there were two James', the son probably put an E in the Middle.  Incidentally he is James Edward - one of his brothers being Edwin Lewis.

My name is Mr M Smylie living in Epping Essex. I am the proud owner of a painting by James Meadows Senior.

I recently bought the painting from a dealer who is based in France I am told that the painting had been hanging in a château for many years and as far as we can tell has never been to auction before.

You will notice that the painting is similar to one that has been to auction entitled  Fishermen pulling Rye trawlers up the beach out of the surf, 1858. Please find attached a copy of my painting dated 1859. I would be interested in any information you may be able to give on this painting. It may well be that you don’t even know of its existence. Also can any members of the family put me in touch with other owners of paintings by this artist as I would like to purchase another painting by him if possible.
