Art History - J.T.Cooke

Expert: Jeni Andrews-Fraser - 2/18/2008

Question
I have two paintings by this artist, dated 1892.They are landscapes, oil.I would like to know more about the painter and if these painting are of any value.

Answer
Hello Randi - and thanks for your question.  I'm afraid I won't be able to help you as I have never heard of J.T. Cooke - (nor can I find him/her on any related artsearch.)  I would recommend you take your paintings to a local fine art dealer who will be able to provide the valuation you seek and may also be able to find out something more about the artist.  You might also check in 19th century paintings of similar landscape views; a region that is depicted (if you can ascertain that); or a medium (oil, watercolour etc.) may help you to locate Mr/Mrs/Ms Cooke.  He/she doesn't appear in art's histroies as having contributed - in style, technique, philosophy or working practices - anything 'different' - but s/he might just be a 'slow' starter .. and perhaps you have an untapped genius on your hands.

Godd luck with your search.
