Question Looking for a bio or info on Prof G. Besfi. I saw a piece tiltled Mignon, a young woman seeming to be deep in thought. I was interested in buying it but wanted to research it first. The piece is made of marble, and signed. The "G" in his name is Guiseppi. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer Hello David - and thank you for your question. I must admit, I have never heard of your 'Prof. G. Besfi' - but found an auction of one of his pieces at Bonhams (link here: http://www.bonhamsandgoodman.com.au/lot_details.php?lot=21065&auction=86) and an ebay listing for an alabaster statue for $49.95! His work is typical of late 19th century 'pompier' art - much derided in its day as being 'sentimental' and without any substance, although there is now a resurgence in the market for it and is no longer criticised as being empty-headed frivolity. I recommend that you interview the seller/auctioneer of this piece to verify authenticity, materials, value (and potential resale value) before committing yourself to the purchase. However, whatever the outcome, if you love itm, buy it. Art is to be enjoyed and if it lifts your spirits then it has served its purpose!
