Question
What was the Modern Tradition in the late 60's and early 70's?

Answer
Greetings Katherine,

If I understand your question as intended, I'd suggest looking at the color field abstraction of artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis, Jules Olitski, etc.  Some of the Minimalists might be considered Modernists as well -- Ellesworth Kelly in particular.

Best wishes, sincerely,
