Question
I have aquired a painting signed J E Meadows dated 1858, called Summer in Sussex.  I took it to a antique dealer and he thought it was one of the first reprints made in the early 1900's.  It has a civil war cannon and a couple dutch girls and a cottage in a meadow like scenery.  This painting is so very pretty and I cant get any info on this artist, I would like to see if he had any other work.  Any info would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Christina

A London landscape painter, James Edwin Meadows was the son of well known artist, James Meadows Senior, and came from a family with a strong artistic tradition.

Despite being based in London, James Edwin Meadows travelled extensively throughout Great Britain seeking inspiration for his landscapes, particularly concentrating on the Southern coastline. He frequently painted  views in Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight.

James Edwin Meadows exhibited at the major London Galleries including the Royal Academy (1854-72), the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists.

Hope this helps
Cheers
