Question
What was the main reason people in ancient Venice owned art?

Answer
Hello Tabetha - and thank you for your quetion (my apologies for the delay in replying).  I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'ancient' Venice (a more specific timeframe would have been useful) but I imagine that the reasons people in Venice owned art are the same for any peoples in any European city at any time: conspicuous displays of wealth, religious contemplation, pleasure, patronage, being 'in' (by commissioning the best artists, etc.) etc.  There's no one answer to your question.
Cheers
