Question
Dear Maestro,

My name is Micah.  I attend a university in Puerto Rico and am currently taking an essay course where I was instructed to write a paper over a certain painting of my choice.

I chose to write over a Puerto Rican artist named, Francisco Rodón.  The painting I selected was the portrat of "Luis Muñoz Marín."

Please, tell me the art movements that were occuring around the 1960's and seventies.  I do not know what type of art movement to be researching in order to learn more about this painter.  Is it abstract art, pop art; I have no idea what the art period is called.  I would like a specific movement, ie... rococo, classicism, cubism.  What kind of art was popular in Latin America around 1969?

Thank you.  I will be interested in reading your response.

Micah

Answer
The 60's and 70's saw the end of abstract expressionism, action painting, & non objective painting of the 50's.

The sixties had Pop Art and later, for a short time, Op Art, and then in the 70's photo-realism and performance art came in.

The piece you have, being a portrait, will probably not embody any of these movements, if that is what you are supposed to be doing.

Look up Edward Kienholtz, George Segal, Claes Oldenberg, Duane Hansen (all sculptors), Tom Wesselman, Chuck Close: that's a start to get an idea of mainstream art of the time.

I don't know the painting you are referring to, but it is probably a traditional portrait style or perhaps somewhat abstract.
