Question
hello. i completed my undergraduate studies in both fine art and art history. i am completing my MAT in art education, but i am becoming increasingly more interested in art therapy. do you know if i have to obtain a MAT in psychology? do i have to obtain one in art therapy?
sorry if this isn't your area of expertise but i didn' t know who else to ask. you seemed proficient enought to try to answer this question. :)

thanks.

Answer
Greetings Tina,

You are correct that art therapy is not my area of expertise.

First, you might also want to review the FAQ from the American Art Therapy Association, Inc.:
www.arttherapy.org/aboutarttherapy/faqs.htm

Second, you might investigate universities that have MA and MS programs in Art Therapy.  A standard MA/MS in Psychology is unlikely to provide the necessary background to be an art therapist -- though you might learn how to intergrate some art therapy exercises with mainstream techniques.

Best wishes, sincerely,
