Gary. There are some simple symbols you should look in to.

Stella maris: the stars on her shoulders

There is a story that goes like this... the minute Mary touched the baby Jesus' foot she saw the future of her sons life and how he would die.
Find out what the baby is holding..
For historical information I would look into the Art Bulletin. The piece is only attributed to Botticelli. Im sure that there is information on why it is attributed to him.
