Art History/timelines

Question
I am an art educator and would like to display a SIMPLE timeline for my junior high students to interpret.  Do you know of a way to weed through the hundreds of extremely important artists in our history to allow my students to store the information in their brains LONG term?  I can't begin to imagine how I would justify who would be the most significant to represent.  Have you ever seen a timeline this simplified?

Answer
Do you mean through all of history? That would be a very long time line. Maybe just pick one or two artists from each period. Perhaps two advisaries so you can see both sides of that periods art styles.

Why dont you make a class out of it and ask them to figure out who should be on it and why? Just an idea..
