AnswerHi Paul,
CI is better defined as, "the capacity of human communities to evolve towards higher order complexity and harmony, through such innovation mechanisms as differentiation and integration, competition and collaboration." [See George Pór, Blog of Collective Intelligence available at

Collective Intelligence draws on the strengths of many diverse fields including Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Management etc. and focus on how new communications technologies are changing they way people work together. The goal of such initiatives is to understand collective intelligence at a deep level so we can create and take advantage of the new possibilities it enables. Consider "Collective intelligence" as a perspective that can be applied to many different kinds of phenomena. For instance, it suggests another way of thinking and organizing things like "organizational effectiveness", "firm productivity", "firm profitability", "teamwork", and "leadership.", or it may assist in market judgement or predictions of future politics/technology. This concept is actively at play in videogames as clans or guilds in MMORG are constantly working together in order to achieve the goals/aims of the games. The open source software development is another fine example where collective intelligence is playing an important role. Further work in this area will lead to both new scientific understanding in a variety of disciplines and practical advances in many areas of business and society.
On ethical grounds, harsh critics of AI are likely to promote collective wisdom-building methods. Whether these can be said to be collective intelligence systems is an open question. Some simply wish to avoid any form of autonomous AI and seem willing to work on rigorous collective intelligence in order to remove any possible niche for AI.
