Artificial Intelligence/Language undestanding

Question
Why is it so difficult to get AI to understand the intricacies of language beyond simple sentences and commands?  I know it's a pretty general question, but I've always been curious.

Answer
Wow!  That's a tough question.  I've spent the last 27 years of my life trying to figure out how to do just what you are asking.  I'm not sure where to begin.  The human brain works totally different from computers.  It has all kinds of real world assumptions built into it.  But remember, it takes years, if not decades for a baby to be able to learn and grow and communicate at an adult level.  Computers definitly do not yet have the processor power needed.  I spend a lot of time thinking about short cuts to make the system run faster.  We are still years away from a Star Trek like experiance.  It's just really hard!

I can answer questions about speech recognition and natural language understanding. I am particulary strong in knowedge based natural langauge techniques. I cannot answer questions about robotics, nueral nets, prolog, or vision recognition - just speech and natural language.

Experience

I have spent 25 years developing natural language software products. I have never developed speech systems, but I have developed sophisticated interfaces from natural language to speech. I have been working with speech recognition systems also for 25 years.
