Dear Chuck ,I am a undergraduate student,interested in developing a voice enabled natural language interface for accessing the computer operations.i intend to finally create a software product,which I beleive will be helpful for the visually impaired,physically handicapped and technologically challenged.It will also help in making certain computer operations extremely easy and time saving.I wanted to know:

1.What similar products are available in this domain? especially which can do intelligent processing.
2.What are the new and exciting other areas where such a technology can be utilised.

The problem is the 'natural language' aspect of your question.  Even speech recognition is weak as of now.  Start with Dragon Naturally speaking software - focus on it's NL features.  See how far you can get.  you will see it's pretty weak.  The 'other areas' are limitless.  but the technology is just not there yet.
