Question How or where do I find an appraiser or possible dealer for a painting that was apprasied in 1981 at $3,900.00? I currently live in Illinois and do not know where to being trying to sell this painting.
Answer I did send an anser, but as all internet systems go.. Not everything gets to where it belongs! LOL.
I had the same problem. I own 4 Brodersons, and some original Amens. Irving Amen was my Uncle.
I had a hard time too. But those listed below were the best that I could find.
Also contact the MOMA, Guggenheim, and Met in NYC. These are Art museums. There is also the Louvre, and The one in London, The Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
They ususally have a list of appraisers and art experts to do this. When you contact them ask for the curator or assitant curator.
However you can start locally.
If they charge to look at the paining, run do not walk to the nearest exit. Anyone who charges to just look at a painting is doing " insurance" or other types of appraisal and may not carry weight if you try to lease the painting to a museum, sell it to an art collector, or sell it to a museum or even get appropriate insurance on the item.
You can try some of the better auction houses like Christies of London, or even contact LLoyds of London. Now they do have Real art appraisers available world wide.
If you get a real appraisal you will probably need to pay for the appraisal record, This could be anywhere from 50 to 200 dollars depending on the depth of the appraisal.. Keep this in a safety deposit box. This is the only document that shows: ownership, dates, places and type of painting etc.
No matter who you bought the painting from they are supposed to have authentication documentation.
in legitimate painting trades, often documentationor history of the item comes with the piece. In the case of my brodersons, I know Robert Brodersons daughter so I knew it was real. Not as many people are lucky enogh to know the artist personally.
If you bought the painting on ebay, many forgeries, fakes and imitaion repros are done. theer are techniques now that mimic hand painting, and that can even be done at Kinkos!
This link takes you to a listing of Fine Art appraiser, experts and assitantce. There is even a listing for a dating and authentication service, now this you will ahve to pay for as it is a scientific and time consuming job. But this authentication procedure is very worthwhile. Though the pay rate varies, It can tell you a real gaugin from a fake gauggy.
I'd start here. then contact the museums. http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Museums_and_Fine_...
