Artists` Exchange - songwriting...singing...songwriting?

Question
Hello. I write poetry and songs and sing where ever I can. Problem is, I don't know how to put music to my words. I've fooled around with a few of my poems and turned them into sort-of songs. I do not write structured poems or songs...no chorus. They just kind of fall out of my head to my fingertips and onto a piece of paper. I have a big passion for poetry and songwriting and would like to do something with it. Not a full time job but some recognition for what I write (because I know its good)would be nice. What suggestions do you have to get things out there to get music put to my thoughts? Thanks! Any advice would be very much appreciated. -Jillian

Answer
The way I put music to what I write is I have a keyboard where I make some nice music and it remembers what you played.  I usually do about 32 beats and then it starts over.  The keyboards today let you add the whole band.   I usually start with the drums,  then the base line and some rythem.  Then let the music play over and over and you'll start hearing your words fitting into the music.   Then I get a tape recorder and just leave it on and just keep singing it over and over.   Not many people have the gift.   But try it,  it's alot of fun.  You can get a good keyboard system at Radio Shack for under 500 dollars.  They even have lots of rythems already programed into them.  use some of them to start out with.
