Arts/Crafts Business - copyright

Expert: Shasta McLaughlin - 4/18/2009

Question
I am an artist; unestablished; I have never sold anything.  I have trouble thinking up my own designs but am really good at replicating things I see.  I like to make intricate sculptures and pieces of characters from Super Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda.  It's too bad I can't sell them because they're copyrighted.  Is there any way I could optain permission from Nintendo?  I understand I may have to pay a fee.

Answer
There might be a way to obtain permission from the owners of the copyright but each company will have it's own way of being contacted and policy.  Some may not allow licenses to reproduce their images at all, others will be very expensive.

If you are good at reproducing what you see try reproducing flowers, trees, animals, old historic buildings, architectural details (like columns, finials, mouldings, etc.), benches or furniture, cars, candelabras, people and anything else that interests you.  It is much cheaper and you might find that you have a real talent that will pay much better without the cost of licenses.

Good luck,
