Question Hi,
I plan to travel the US with an RV and make a living by selling my artwork out of my van at the road side. Is that legal for a foreigner entering on a tourist visa? Is selling artwork considered work and thus prohibited? Do federal (immigration) laws apply or is this regulated by states? Could you guide me to find specific and reliable information on this? Thank you very much!
Regards,
Thomas
Answer Thomas,
I'm sorry I have no idea if this would be legal. I'm not even exactly sure where to go to have your question answered.
Perhaps immigration, or the Internal Revenue Service. Citizens of the United States must get a permit from each city, county and state they do business in depending on the requirements of each place. I imagine that it will be the same for you and that they will expect you to pay taxes for income according to those of the cities, counties, and states you visit.
Selling artwork is considered work. I don't know if it is prohibited. In the case of entering from outside the U.S. I really don't know if it is regulated just by the states or if it is federal as well.
Good luck and I'm sorry I have no real answers for you,
