Arts/Crafts Business - Starting crafts business, online and wholesale. (hair bows)

Hello,
I had a question about selling hair bows. I have been making hair bows for local stores, but I wanted to increase my exposure. First of all, I wanted to know how I can copyright my designs since most other hair bows look exactly the same and mine are completely different. I don't want anyone to copy my designs if I start selling online. Also, where can I find craft and trade shows to show people my designs and what are the requirements for it. What is the start up cost to start a small business, and by this I mean licenses and documents needed?

Answer
Mary,

I have a question how can they look exactly the same and be completely different?  This would be your unique selling point that you would want to emphasize where ever you sell them.

First of all you need to understand the difference between a copyright and a patent.  Each one has its own purpose to protect your intellectual and actual products.

Since I'm not a copyright or patent lawyer I don't fully understand all the ins and outs of the process.  So to get you started I did an Internet search on how to copyright a product and the link below contains my results:

To see more information on craft show licenses see my article at:

For more information on finding craft shows see:

Thank you and if you have any more questions please let me know.

Have a great day,
