How do I get started?

AnswerDear Rhonda,
My number one answer to creative people wanting to start a business is to take something you are passionate about and create from there. If you're not passionate about your business then who else will be? Creating a business takes time, energy, dedication and love - so if you're not doing what you love then think again.
However, that being said, whatever you do create with your talents must also be not only needed in the marketplace, but must be unique with your own branding and point of view. I encourage you to study your competition so you know what similar products exist; what their price points are etc. so you can be both competitive and unique. Determine what your point of view is.
Since it does not exactly sound as though you have started a business nor have a tangible product, I would advise you to start by studying the marketplace for greeting cards. Learn about prices, printing, creating, costs and your competition. Do all this before you come up with prototypes so you really understand what sets you apart.
Because of your several talents - you might also expand your thinking into other products besides greeting cards. Brainstorm other ideas for utilizing the photos and poetry. For example, could you license your photographs; create framed pictures or other objects that are printed; create screen prints for fabric or perhaps home decor? I am not suggesting that you skip the greeting cards - just that you look at other possibilities.
Creating your own style, branding look and feel will be key elements in your industry. It starts with passion and a point of view.
I am a big advocate of making a profit and not just dabbling in business. Turning your hobby into a business takes dedication, planning and creativity because "Hobbies cost money and businesses make money." There is a difference!
