QuestionHi Jane Im doing some Illutration for a childrens book, and its the Authers first book also. I need some advice on pricing for this? Its about 5 pages and the cover. So do you have any suggestions for me? I need a quick reply please.
AnswerHi Cris,
Pricing and illustrating is very subjective. Your price depends on several aspects.
Know your purpose with this project. Are you doing it for exposure or are you already known in the marketplace for your illustrations?
Will you be promoting the book yourself with the author?
Will you be receiving royalties from book sales?
Are you looking for a flat rate and then you walk away?
Do you know how the distribution will be handled?
Is it self-published or through a publishing company?
Are you submitting a proposal or have you already made an agreement?
Let me know some of these and I may be able to be more specific in my answers.
I personally have had quotes for creating a character from an illustrator anywhere from $600 - $3500 and this was for one drawing. Also had a quote for a mock -up of a book cover (not the final) for $500-$1500 and this was only for the front cover and spine.
