AboutMaryAnn F. Kohl Expertise I am an expert in anything about art for children, but not crafts. I have written over ten books of art ideas for kids, using materials found commonly in most homes. I like easy ideas!

Question Hello. Im a registered art therapist who scored a job as a teacher for toddlers ages 12-18 months old. Unfortunately I cannot do much art with this age group, but I was wondering what, if any, I can do with them. I have some bingo markers and loads of construction paper, play dough, markers/crayons, stamps, stickers, yarn, popsicle sticks, glue, fingerpaint, brushes. I know projects have to be kept to a minimum since they have a short attention span. Any idea's?
Answer One thing to remember is that kids this age LOVE repetition, doing the same thing over and over gives them a chance to try new things within familiar areas.
You ask, "Do you have any ideas?"
Well, actully, YES ...I wrote an entire book called "First Art: Process Art for Toddlers and Two's".... normally I wouldn't suggest you go out and buy or 'rent' a book, but I think this one is perfect for you. Also"Preschool Art" is an excellent book packed with resources for you. More than you would ever need to use in one year.
You can see samples from these books on my website http://www.brightring.com, and then choose "Free Activities".
Check out all the Building Block books by Liz and Dick Wilmes...like "Paint Without Brushes".
I think you will find art for kids this age very freeing when you realize it doesn't have to be fancy or dependent upn variety. Playdough is amazing for them...simple manipulation, then add tools one day, another day add macaroni to stick in the dough, another day, small birthday candles or large buttons.Art at this age is manipulation of materials, not a finished product. In fact, the mantra is "Process, Not Product". It is a chance to experiment, explore, and create.
