Arts/Crafts for Kids - Soap flakes/grate'em

Expert: MaryAnn F. Kohl - 8/27/2006

Question
I have searched high and low for these.  I only found a website that
sells the Dri-Pak brand at 9.95 a pound.  Do you know where I can
find for cheaper? or is it okay to grate Ivory soap for your crafts?

Thanks so much and we love your book, Preschool Art!!

Leticia

Answer
Hello, Leticia:

Sorry to report that no one makes soap flakes anymore for us common folk anymore, that I know of.. I grate a bar of soap on a cheese grater, or put some bars of soap through a Cuisenart (I haven't tried a blender). It doesn't take long, and I believe it's worth it for projects needing soap flakes. Otherwise, my best advice is --- SKIP THAT ART PROJECT.  :o)

I wish Ivory would still make the flakes.

I wonder: Would the Dri-Pak people sell you something smaller for school use... or maybe, go ahead and buy the pound of flakes and share them with other schools or groups?

Well, I think the easiest is to grate some soap flakes. Wish I had better advice or results for you.

Thanks for your warm and kind words... :o)
