Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I am planning a trip for myself, my husband and 2 teenage boys in June. I thought all inclusives would be best with 2 big eaters (but no alcohol drinkers). After reading your comments I wonder if it is really necessary. I calculated that I'm paying a total $230/day for the family to eat...which is high, but figured 'normal' for an island where everything is imported.  I also thought that all inclusive was tied to use of their equipment as well, and I have no idea how much rentals would run. Is $230 reasonable for 3 meals and snacks and equipment use??

ANSWER: Hi Deb  ! All inclusive is really best only if there are hard core drinkers in the group. I, Myself have found A-I to be a good waste of $$. There are so many places to eat, along with fast food outlets on the island you can go to. Usually, a matter of preference. If you can afford it, do so for the convenience, but if on a budget, its much better not doing the A-I.  Equipment rentals...depends on what it is. A floating air bag is usually 5 dollars for the afternoon. If it will be used daily, just buy one in the States and bring it with you! Back to the food...I find that you average about 10% higher for food on the island compared to the States, so Iwouldnt say it's much more expensive. You can even prepare some light meals in the room, if equipped with a kitchenette. Plenty of supermarkets to go to!

QUESTION: Thanks for the prompt reply. When I called a resort to ask about costs, I was told that a cheeseburger costs $10, therefore I was quite concerned about food expenses! )Perhaps prices are higher at the resorts than at other restaurants on the island???) That is a far cry from just 10% higher!!
Also, I have so many questions but feel that they may have already been answered previously. Is there any way to do a search of the previously answered questions by 'subject'??

Answer
Hi Deb...food prices at the resorts that offer AI will have very high food prices, as it is more profitable and easier for the patrons to buy the package. For example, my resort (Aruba Beach Club) I can get a breakfast for 7.95, and next door, a buffet for 12.95. I, myself am a pretty big eater, and I never spent more than 150.00 per week on food! I would have to say, if you are going to have a large breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacking in between, then the AI may be the way to go, but you must eat 3+ times a day for the duration at the same outlets that resort has. ( boring at times). What I may suggest, is go to www.aruba-bb.com, register, and use their forums. There is a wealth of info in there! But, you will find a mixed bag of opinions for AI and non AI. As earlier, its all a matter of preference! For me, its a poor choice to do so, but going on 24 trips there,  I know all the places to eat!!!
