QuestionThanks Andy,
I had already Emailed the Ministry Of Economics but haven't gotten a response yet. Maybe I'll give them a call.
As someone who has plenty of experience on the island, do you have any knowledge or opinion of how Arubans generally accept foreigners starting a business on the island? Going there as a tourist, the locals are warm and friendly--would it be your impression however that an American attempting to start a business (even if allowed) may generally be met by the Aruban people coldly (and/or by non-cooperation)?
Thanks Again!
Tony

Hi Andy,
I don't know if this question falls within your expertise or not, but I'll give it a shot.
Do you know if it is at all possible/feasible for a U.S. citizen to start a business in Aruba? A few partners and I have an idea that we feel would work quite nicely (in the tour/recreation sector).
I have browsed quite a few websites to get information, and no where does it say it is prohibited. I do know you need to get permission, and that there are stipulations etc, however the information does seem to be a bit vague. Also, the couple of times I have been there I can't recall seeing any American run business.
Thanks,
Tony

Hi Anthony! First thing is you must get permission from the Minister of Economics to open the business. That involves all sorts of details which you may be familiar with..just like here in the States. However, as an American doing business in Aruba, you MUST have an Aruban partner that controls/holds at least 51% of the business/corporation. This has been in effect long ago, as it is easier for the Aruban government to handle any legal problems within their own domain, and relieves the necessity for outside litigation when things come up. I think that would be your biggest hurdle. Beyond that, there is not too much more info I can give you, but my knowledge is based on when I wanted to start up an enterprise there back in 1988. If there is anything else I can help you with, feel free to call on me again.
AnswerHi Tony! Arubans, in my opinion, are the most friendliest group I have encountered! They would welcome any business, as they know tourism is their main income. As for American run businesses, there are quite a few that did go to the Island and start one up. Most of them succesful As you look into some businesses, you will find a lot of American run locations. There are also quite a few chains there. You have McDonalds, KFC, Wendy's, Dunkin Donuts, Pizza Hut, Tony Romas, Subway, Dominos and I can go on and on! I guess your next step would be and wait for the Minister's office to contact you. Be patient, as Arubans take their time at things. Not that they procrastinate, it is just their relaxed style!
