QUESTION: The cultural revolution

Answer
Dear Oliver,

The Cultural Revolution is largely considered as a failure. During those years, the elites, scholars and teachers were sent to the fields to cultivate crops and rear animals. Their books were burned and paintings destroyed. Schools were closed and an entire generation of Chinese went without any schooling and hence that period was know as the 'decade of lost years'. On the other hand, many peasants were sent to run local governments and sent to Beijing to rule the country. Untrained for the role of management, the Chinese economy grind almost to a stop in those years.

Culturally, the government destroyed most artifacts, including religious art. Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, religions that had a long history in China, were suppressed while the worship of Mao Zedong was encouraged. This was achieved through the spread of the little red book and the widespread use of propaganda. The result is that much of Chinese traditions have been lost in that 10 years. Today, traditions that are mentioned in Tang poems and Song poems can barely be found in China, but they remain widespread in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.

I hope that helps. Do let me know if you have other queries.

Regards,
Jen
