Ask the Veterinarian/Dizzy Kitty

Question

Olivia
Hello.  I have a 5 year old female cat.  She is generally in good health, but is a bit overweight.  Despite the weight problem my vet assures me she is a healthy and happy kitty.  Today I got a little scared though.  Olivia began to move her head as if she was watching a fly, but nothing was there.  Then she began to walk away, and seemed to be losing her balance.  To me, it looked as if she was losing her balance/dizzy.  She eats and drinks well, I feed her twice a day 1/2 cup each time of regular indoor cat food formula food.  I have never seen my cat act this way (dizzy) and am worried for her.  I am going to get her into the vet in the next week regardless, but was hoping you would have some insight to ease my mind on this situation.  Thanks for any advice you may have to offer.

BTW this "dizzy" spell lasted maybe a minute or less.

Answer
These "dizzy" spells may be the result of an inner ear problem.  When she is having these, do her eyes flutter back and forth?  That is a sure sign of vestibular disease.  Can you lay her on her back and put her head in different positions without her eyes fluttering?  That would be good if they don't.  If these are frequent, then have your vet check her out paying particular attention to the middle ears.  Other reasons include certain toxins, certain viral infections, especially feline leukemia, and trauma, if she hit her head on something.
