Ask the Veterinarian/Question about Puppies
Expert: Dr. Louis N. Gotthelf - 12/29/2008
Question"Hello, Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I am going to rescue a German Shepherd 8 week old pup. I live near the Philadelphia area and would like to know if you recommend me using a flea and tick treatment on this puppy. Is it to early to use this or any type of flea/tick bath on puppies. I don't know if it has any parasites, but it is an outside dog that lives with other dogs and is dirty. I want to make sure that I use the correct amount so that I don't over medicate the dog. I am going to take to pup to see the vet as soon as I get it, but is there any thing that I can do or should ask the vet what the dog needs. For example, K9 advantage, heart worm pills, and vaccines."
Thank you
AnswerIf the pup is dirty, he can have a bath and make sure you dry him really well. If there are no fleas or ticks, then you really don't need to apply anything right now. You should start his vaccines at 6 weeks and continue at 9, 12, and 16 weeks. Your vet will tell you what vaccines to use in your area. The pup should be checked for intestinal parasites as well and dewormed if necessary. We generally don't start heartworm preventative until the pup is 4 months old and we have some idea of his adult weight.
