Question
I have a 4 yr. old American pitbull female she has 6 wk. old puppies. Two weeks ago her hair started to thin around her face, and along her sides now she's has some spots with all the hair gone.I was afraid of mange and it may be,but I have a dog medical book and nothing sounded the same.I know I will have to take her to the vet,but if I could get an idea it would help me calm down.I have even been a little afraid to let my kids pet her very much.
Thank You
Wendy

Answer
Wendy -

If she is nursing pit bull puppies then more than likely her hair loss is due to stress.  Have your veterinarian examine her to determine is she has a mite that becomes active when the animal is stresses. Even though she probably enjoys her babies, nursing puts a certain amount of stress on her body which may cause her to lose hair.  At six seeks old her puppies should be weaned and given puppy food.   Make sure you are giving her food high is nutrients, such as puppy food for the next four to six weeks.
