Ask the Veterinarian/rash

Question
We are caring for a 10 puppy litter. Mom died at 2 1/2 weeks. Now 4 1/2 weeks old. Mostly indoors until this week. 4 of them began having rash on tummies. Worse on 1 male around his genitals. Started using petroleum jelly after feeding and cleaning. Now have an outside area for all but the hottest of the day. Any medicated cream that would help? Seems to be better, but still concerned.

Answer
Vicki -

Hard to tell without seeing him examining them, but it sounds like "puppy acne" which is similar to baby acne.  That will usually go away on its own without any treatment.  If the rash becomes irritated, or infected (very reddened, inflamed, etc) seek veterinary help.  Often orphaned puppies will nurse on each other for comfort; this can cause the affected areas to become infected.  Keep the area clean with betadine, but make sure the puppies do not lick it off of each other.

I commend your for taking care of such a big litter in the absence of their mother - I'm sure they would thank you if they could.
