Ask the Veterinarian - swollen lymph glands toy poodle

Expert: Marie Peppers - 7/22/2008

Question
Hello Marie,

I would greatly appreciate any help or advice you could give me about my 4 year old spayed male toy poodle.  The vet noticed swollen lymph glands on both sides of his penis area.  They had not been noticed before, but now that I know they are there I believe  he has been licking them on a regular basis for several months.

I realize it means there may be an infection or inflammation and the only thing I can think of is that he swallowed a bone fragment and it is stuck causing an inflammation.  I read about the cotton ball remedy at:  http://www.k911.biz/Petsafety/DogAteChickenBone.htm but because he didn't recently swallow a bone, and doesn't seem to have serious symptoms, I wanted to ask you first.  We have noticed he is a little more lethargic but we put it down to him 'growing up and mellowing out'.

Do you have any comments, suggestions, ideas or advice?  I will not hold you to anything you tell me and accept full responsibility for what I do with my pet.  Much appreciated.

Thank you, Marie.

Answer
Shelia:  I don't think I would do the cotton ball treatment.  I went to the site and read about it.  Many times we tell people to give the pets canned pumpkin.  That has loads of fiber and will help the item to safely pass thru the intestines.

I have a feeling that it is not a bone or fragment.  When a dog has swelling, as you mentioned, the nodes are trying to clean out the system.  There could be many things going on such as virus or bacterial.  Here is what I suggest you try:

Give this baby some Vitamin E  (1) 50IU per day.  You can prick the capsul and squirt it onto his food.   Do this every day for at least 30 days.  Don't worry, this dosage is for cat size dogs.

Next, have him go onto a Probiotic / any good quality company that makes Probiotics would be great.  You can give dogs and cats human probiotics.  Many companies are now making this product for pets.  Just follow the directions on the bottle.

Good Luck with this!

NuVET Plus is a great Immune System Booster - Call Joan , she can explain the Money Back guarantee.  NuVET helps to reduce swelling and itching, also excessive licking, too.
