Ask the Veterinarian/Dachshund Knee Popping

Question
I have a 4.5 month old miniature dachshund.  Recently, I began noticing that his right hind knee was popping.  My vet said the structures supporting his patella are loose, and they may or may not tighten as he gets older.  He hasn't had an episode yet where he lifts his leg up, but occasionally it seems as if he's limping slightly.  I have read some about luxating patellas on the internet.  What are the chances he will outgrow this versus needing surgery, and is there anything I can do to prevent it?  Thanks!

I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent luxating patellas.  I think that surgery is the  best thing for your doggie. Surgical repair is the best option and the rate of failure  with the surgical repair of luxating patella is very low, especially if an experienced surgeon performs the  procedure.
