Ask the Veterinarian/sudden death in cat and ferret within 2 weeks

Question
My sister's cat of 14 years died suddenly 2 weeks ago.  When she found her, she had dried blood on her nose.  Today, her ferret approximately 2 years old died also.  She had dried blood on her nose as well.  I don't feel this to be coincidence.  I am worried now for her 2 other cats.  Any idea what could have caused sudden death in both a cat and ferret in such a close period of time?
We have considered Radon or some other environmental affect.  Anything you can offer would be appreciated.

It may be coincidence that both animals died within a short period of time. The advanced age of your sister's cat leads me to believe that disease played a major role in her death. Had either pet been to the vet recently?

Have their living area checked for rat poisons and other toxins. The dried blood leads me to believe that there might have been internal bleeding.  A necropsy (post mortem exam) might have giving you and indication of why she passed away.
