Ask the Veterinarian/Black Toenail

Question
About 2 days ago, my Boston Terrier mix was able to dig the tray of his cage out.  In the process he ripped off one of his toe nails, but one nail on the other foot is now causing him pain and is turning black where it was previously pink.  He will not put any pressure on the foot at all now.  Do I need to worry?  Or will this fix itself?

Answer

You should have your dog examined by a veterinarian.  The fractured toenail can be very painful and may also need antibiotics.  Your vet cn provide your pup with appropriate pain medicines and antibiotics,
