Question
We have a very good friend in our dog Clee,She is very old and is aproaching the time when we will have to help her into that slumber from which there is no returning. My question is this, Is there a good over the counter medication we can give her for the pain of arthritis? I am getting her a heating pad today to help her,She is eating well and we are giving her glucosamine but in the last couple days she has experienced joint pain. If you can help we wold be extremely grateful.  Thank you, Chuck & Lora

Answer
Chuck -

Glucosamine is the best over the counter supplement for arthritis.  Unfortunately, there are no other OTC meds that are appropriate for dogs; most OTC products are not effective or safe, especially for older dogs.

Have a veterinarian examine her; if she is in reasonably good health there are a few medications that can help her to be more comfortable. Antiinflammatory medications are available that can help to reduce her pain and discomfort.

No animal (or person) should suffer in pain; have your vet give her meds that can help her age with minimal discomfort.
