Ask the Veterinarian/fluid leaking from dogs rear

Question
I have a 3 yr old female Chocolate Lab that has been spayed. She licked intensely at her rear and will have a clear fluid coming out, sometimes in drops and other times in puddles. She also has alot of problems with horrible smelling gas and I usually see the leaking when she is passing gas. The fluid itself is clear and does not smell bad, and she tries to lick it up. I took her to the vet and had her checked for urinary infection, but it was negative. She is very active and has no other problems otherwise.

Answer
Denise -

Is the leaking coming from her anus or her vulva?  If she still has a discharge after a visit to the vet, return to the vet to voice your concerns.

Urine incontinence usually occurs due to a lack of estrogen in the body.  This is more common in older dogs.  Medicines can treat this condition; if oral medicines do not work, there is a surgical procedure that can help fix the incontinence.
