Ask the Veterinarian/strange illness in energetic golden retriever

Question
We have been noticing that our young, 6 year old golden has been losing weight over the last months (approx 10 pounds) and is now struggling to get up. She even whimpered when we touched her back hips. The vet took xrays, no hip dysplacia. blood work showed low red and white blood cell count, anemia. In addition, her muscles are very atrophied. The vet is perplexed. For now prescribing doxycline, prednizone and an anti inflamatory. But the vet does not know what is going on. I am afraid we might lose her. By the way, the snap tests showed negative for tics, etc... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Answer
Mimo -

Have your dog examined by an veterinary specialist.  He/she can perform tests that may help diagnose the problem. It sounds like she is experiencing something  neurological judging by the way she is slow to move and has atrophied muscles.  Unfortunately, I am unable to help in diagnosing your pet because I do not have the benefit of a physical exam.

Good Luck -
