Question We have an English Bulldog that is brindle in color. She was given to us about one and a half years ago. We assume she is about two and a half years old. We live in South Georgia and she is an inside dog. She has a scar on the lower portion of her stomach so we assume she has been fixed. We also assume this because she has never gone in heat. We have several issues with her. Here are a few of them and I am asking you what is causing her to do these things and how can we cure them:
1. Constant itching and scratching to the point she bleeds and causes scabs. She gets under our footboard of our bed and scratches for hours if we let her. We bathe her about every two weeks and she doesn’t have many fleas. She may have one or two when we bathe her so we don’t think fleas are an issue with her scratching.
2. She sits down and twirls on her rear end. What is this about?
3. She seems to have an involuntary mouth movement in which she moves her mouth almost like she’s trying to talk.
4. Out of the blue, she sits and licks the air to the point that she’s drooling on both sides of her mouth until we tell her to stop.
5. She sits on her stomach with her back legs spread out and standing on her front legs and she rocks back and forth rubbing her stomach back and forth.
6. She gets a lot of goop for lack of better terms in her eyes. There are some times in the morning when she wakes up that one or both of her eyes are sealed shut from to goop.
Do you have any of these problems with your bulldogs?
Thank you VERY much for your help. If you prefer not to respond for whatever reason, I understand and I wish you well.
Sincerely,
Frank
Answer There are many reasons for itching including parasites like sarcoptic mange, allergies, infections from bacteria and yeasts and some other contact allergies. YOu should have your vet check this dog and possibly get the dog on a steroid to control itching and antibiotics or antifungals to help the infection if present
