Ask the Veterinarian - Male dog bleeding from penis

Expert: Charlotte Sherrell, DVM - 11/5/2009

Question
I have a female golden retriever who has been in heat for almost 3 weeks.  My male has had no contact with her, but sits outside of the room she is in and whines.  This AM he began bleeding from his penis.  Is this out of the ordinary and should I regard it as serious?

Answer
LouAnn -

You should have your dog seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.  Because your female is in heat, your male may be injuring his penis in an effort to mate with your female.  The tissue of the penis is very sensitive and can become injured fairly easily.
