I have over 35 years experience in the field of veterinary medicine. I specialized in small animals and did wildlife rehab for over 25 years, mostly raptors, squirrels and opossums. I am a Small Animal Nutritional Consultant with 6 certificates from Hills Pet Foods, CNM and Purina. I also specialized in Small Animal Dentistry which is a field I truly love.

Ask the Veterinarian - cat sneezing

Question
4 year old Calico cat, rescued from a shelter about 2 years ago.
About every 3 months sneezes and sneezes for about 2 days, lethargic, not feeling well. Then it all stops until about 3 months later.
Do you have any idea what might cause this?

Sounds like she has a latent virus that is coming out and making her not feel well. I hope she was tested for leukemia, etc when you got her.

Is she current on her vaccinations? She can get airborne Upper Respiratory infections from cats in the neighborhood if she is not.

Cats can have sneezing fits from the same thing we do; dust, hair, cold, dander, rugs, pollens etc. Wood smoke is a big culprit as is cigarette smoke.

If she hasn't had a check up from the vet it is time to do so. Let him/her know about the sneezing and make sure her vaccinations are current.
