Ask the Veterinarian/dog uti infections, surgery

Question
I have a 10 month old female spayed lab. She has had 4 uti's and is currently being treated for her 5th one with antibiotics. The vet I take her to is suggesting skin fold surgery, as the cause of these infections seems to be the vulva not being very well exposed to air. A friend has suggested products to me that contain natural ingredients such as cranberry as a preventative as well as adding garlic to her food and wiping her daily with baby wipes. Is this safe? And what is the probability of this working, considering her situation? Are there any other alternatives to surgery? Do you have any suggestions on products or otherwise I should try before putting her through surgery? Your help is greatly appreciated.

It is not uncommon for a young female puppy to develop "puppy vaginitis".  This syndrome usually presents with a vaginal discharge and frequent urination.  It can also take several rounds of antibiotics before the symptoms clear.

In my experience, garlic will do nothing for a case like this.  In fact, adding garlic to her food may upset her stomach and you may end up treating gastritis along with the UTI.  I do not have any experience with cranberry as a preventative method for treating vaginitis.

If you are not comfortable with the suggestion of surgery, seek a second opinion. If you are hesitant to get another opinion, be patient to determine if this problem is simply one related to age and not body conformation.
