About Jana Connell RVT, CVT
Expertise PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING TO ME:
I am NOT a vet and do NOT diagnose diseases. That is only for a licensed Veterinarian to do. I will give you suggestions and steer you toward calling your vet for help. You can call the vet's office and talk to the technician there or the vet at times. Don't be afraid to call them! If you have a serious issue with your pet please post it to one of the veterinarians in here- I will tell you the same thing in my answer.
IF your pet is injured or in an emergency situation, CALL YOUR VET- Do not wait and post in here. Just call the vet's office and get them in to see the vet right away. Critical treatment time is lost if you seek answers here when you should have your precious pet at the vets!! Don't sit at home waiting for an answer when your pet is critically ill or injured!!
I can answer most questions about small animal and wildlife care as well as small animal nutrition. I can also answer questions about all phases of dental care for small animals.
I DO NOT do birds (unless it is wildlife or songbirds) or HAMSTERS/GERBILS/CHINS/GUINEA PIGS/REPTILES/FROGS/RABBITS/PET BIRDS OF ANY KIND so please submit these questions to the appropriate sections. I, as well as other experts in here, do NOT do homework questions- that is for YOU to do! Please respect these rules for all of us. Thanks!

Question
our puppy was at a friends house with a fellow house member when they came back home i was informed that he is throwing up, alot, and that he has some fish of some sort at this friends house ( a brother of the puppy lives in this friends home). This was yesterday and his morning he looks to have lost weight and is not eating his dog food (he ate a piece of cooked steak)and his pee is darker in color. I am worried, not sure what to do things are real tight and unable to afford a vet visit if it could be avoided. What do you think it may be? He is still a happy puppy and wants to play but no where near as much as before. This morning all he has done is sleep, or just lay there. Please help!!!
Answer This could be many things. It could be parvo starting,it could be a virus or a bacterial overload from eating garbage.
It could be gastro-enteritis from eating these things, which is an inflamed stomach and intestines. This can often get bloody just like parvo.
Puppies should never be fed fish, steak any kind of human food. They need puppy growth food and nothing else. They need Science Diet Puppy Growth for large breeds so that they get optimal nutrition for very little cost per feeding.
This food is all he needs and nothing more. He does need to be vaccinated for distemper, parvo virus and a few more things. He needs those as soon as possible before he gets parvo. He also needs to be on heartworm prevention now. That is one thing that you don't want to have to pay for later-heartworm treatment.
Pit bulls are extremely susceptible to getting parvo and it can be fatal very fast. Parvo is airborne and a very hardy virus and can be carried home on your shoes, your car tires, all kinds of things!!
So if he isn't well in 24 hours then he needs to see the vet asap. In the meantime, don't feed him his evening meal and get give him limited water.
If he starts to have diarrhea or still is vomiting in the morning or all night, he will get very dehydrated very quickly so you need to get him to the vets fast.
He sure has cute blue eyes, but I have never seen two blue eyes on a pitbull before.
I hope he gets well. Please don't feed him any more human food and make sure he doesn't eat for the night.
