Ask the Veterinarian/Cat/Urine?

Question
Hello,
About 4 months ago we rescued a 2 yr old male cat from a shelter. When we adopted him from the shelter, http://www.arf.net/index.php , we understood that he had been treated for a parasite and that he was 100% treated. Since he has been at his new home he has been very messy around the litter box, whatever, but he has also had allot of diarrhea. At first we had thought it was him adjusting to his new food and home etc. Yesterday, we built a new enclosed litter area for him. This morning...around the box, we saw a circular redish spot about 8 inches in diameter. I believe it is blood in his urine, it is not deep red, and the stain is very circular. I am going to take him to the vet, but would like to hear your thoughts considering the information given, Thanks

Answer
Barn -

Often when a cat is sick, they will urinate outside the litter box to let you know that there are problems. There are many reasons why that spot may be on your floor - it is best to have your cat examined to determine what is really wrong with him.  A veterinarian can give a physical exam and test  for internal parasites, etc.  It is difficult for me to give possible disease scenarios without the benefit of a physical exam.
