Ask the Veterinarian/Weird noise

Question
I have a 1 year old Maltipoo, who when gets excited, starts making this noise that sounds like she's hyperventalating.  There are times she can go a week or two without making the noise, but if we play too rough with her she starts making the noise that sounds like a loud wheezing, hyperventalating, snort.  Should I be concerned and take her to the vet immediately?
Thanks!

You should surely have your pet examined by a veterinarian.  This breed (Maltese) tend to have heart problems and should be checked thoroughly. However, it sounds as if your dog is exhibiting a syndrome called "reverse sneezing".  This is often seen in smaller dogs, but can occur in dogs of any size.  I cannot diagnose your pet without the benefit of a physical exam; have your veterinarian determine if reverse sneezing is the diagnosis.
