Question
Our 6 year female(neutered, never bred) has a constant problem with a crust building up on the outside of her mouth. This is associsated with her canines i believe?? as her canines in particular are very brown and icky looking. Any ideers?? Thanks in advance! Brian

Answer
Brian -

There are usually dermatological reasons why dogs have crusty buildup on the mouth.   The teeth may have a slight influence on her muzzle if they have accumulated heavy tartar.   Unfortunately, because I have not had the benefit of giving her a physical exam, I cannot begin to tell you what is actually going on with your dog at this point.  Consult your local veterinarian to determine why she has excess  crusting on her muzzle.

If her teeth are dirty and "icky", consider scheduling a dental cleaning for your dog.  Healthy teeth help to keep the body healthy -the ickiness you describe is bacteria that has accumulated on your dog's teeth.  That bacteria can cause damage to the teeth and gums.  Your veterinarian can help you keep your dog's teeth healthy.
