Ask the Veterinarian/8 week old Pug with bowed legs

Question
I am going to take our new pug puppy to the vet, but just thought I'd ask your opinion. We just purchased an 8 week old pug and I have noticed that his back legs are bowed out when he stands. He appears to walk okay and he can run as well, but when he stands still his legs bow and it looks like his hips pop. Just curious if you think this is going to be a huge problem or if it is normal for the age and the breed of dog. Also, he has a small hernia where his umbilical cord was, and I have read that this is either hereditary or it is from the mother chewing the cord too short.

Answer

The umbilical hernia can be repaired very easily.  The deformation you describe in the pug is very common; it can be exacerbated with excess weight, but Pugs often do well with bowed legs.

Have you veterinarian evaluate your pet for an accurate assessment of his conformation.  You vet can give you a more accurate prognosis of your dog's condition.
