Our 8 year old Jack Russell/Bichon cross was diagnosed 2 years ago with Immune-Mediated Rheumatoid Arthritis.  He has been treated with prednisone since that time.  Due to some complications and limited symptom relief, our vet is recommending cyclosporin treatment.  We are concerned about the high cost ($250Cdn per month) and asked about using a generic form of the drug.  The vet advised us that the generic form is not as effective as the brand name.  We checked with our pharmacist, who told us that there is no difference in the two - the generic drug is the same as the brand name, but the price is significantly lower.  Your opinion/advice would be appreciated - Is there a specific reason for using the brand name drug in this treatment protocol?  Thank you very much.

In my experience the generic cyclosporine has not been as effective as the brand name.  I think that is because the quality of the products is different which might explain why there is such a difference in pricing.  

I usually start my patients with the brand named product for a few months and then change to the generic product if owners need a less expensive product.  

Brand name does not matter if one is choosing dish detergent or garbage bags, but when it comes to the efficacy of a medication, the brand named product is often the more effective product.
